ESCARPMENT TRAIL HIKE
Distance: 7.5 miles (not including optional 0.5 mile spur to Sunset Rock)
Getting there: Head for North/South Lake campground on CR18 (off 23A at the edge of Tannersville)
Parking: Just before the campground gatehouse, turn right on Schutt Rd; parking lot is on the right (free)
Difficulty: Not the longest of these hikes but the hardest, with a lot of up and down and some rock scrambles (4/5)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Description: Incredible history; unbelievable views
Hiking directions: From the parking lot, cross Schutt Rd to find the Escarpment trail. You will be on this blue-blazed trail for 6 incredible miles of hiking and rock scrambling. The old Catskill Mountain House site is at 4.2 miles and at miles 5.7 miles you have the option to take a yellow spur on your right to reach the extraordinary views from Sunset Rock (an extra 0.5 miles there and back). Just 0.3 miles after this spur take Rock Shelter trail on your left (yellow blazes; not the most exciting path, but your jaw has already been floored). Keep right at the junction 0.4 miles later and continue following yellow blazes until you hit CR18, emerging opposite Schutt Rd where you began
