  1. I’m confused about the ending…did Patch Shoot and kill Matthew, and then did McCluskey shoot and kill Patch ?? Or did Patch shoot Matthew and then Patch finally went over the edge into madness ?? Or did Patch turn with the gun and McCLuskey shot him ?

    • Disappointing ending. I re-read the last 2 chapters thinking I missed something. I agree with the other posts. Who killed who? Did Matthew really get Patrick fired? Was the last chapter supposed to be Patrick’s last thoughts before he died? Frustrating. Also, it bothered me how often McCluskey referred to Hannah as “Aitch” every other line in the book.

  2. I am also very confused and disappointed in the ending. An anticlimax to the previous action without a clear picture of what happened. Same questions as above. I really liked the book until the .. pretty bad ending!

  3. Final chapter: Why was Patch meeting Hannah at a restaurant (as opposed to being incarcerated) and why did she need to explain how she ate her steak when, a) they’d been married for some years and, b) he’d eaten steak off her body early in the book?

  4. Can you explain the ending ?
Patch shoots and kills Matthew and then the cop shoots Patch.
he lives and gets back with his wife. Why doesn’t he end up in jail.

Ending is way too confusing !!!

  5. Disappointing ending. I re-read the last 2 chapters thinking I missed something. I agree with the other posts. Who killed who? Did Matthew really get Patrick fired? 6. Patrick killed Matthew, Mcluskey killed Patrick. The final chapter was another bit of backstory…how Patrick and Hannah after meeting as adults, went out on their first date. The anniversary that they celebrated every year after. The suit, pocket square, champagne and same meal. My interpretation, just saying!

  7. Agree with other reviews about the weird ending….when did this take place? before or after the previous chapter? I muddled though the book with it’s constantly changing narrators but by the last page, I was glad to be finished with the book.
I’m not tempted to even tackle his first book.

    shirle

  8. I am so confused with ending. Who killed who??? Is the ending Patch’ s interpretation before he does? Why doesn’t Matthew get to give his version of the story when all the characters are there at the end? It doesn’t make sense, and is get disappointing. It’s a shame because had the ending been clearer, I believe more people would have enjoyed it. I wish Yates would simply answer the readers questions so as a reader we would have closure.

  9. It was open to interpretation. Hannah was telling Patrick what he wanted to hear. That she loved him, that he did what she wanted. The only thing we can be sure of is that Patrick was shot and died and that Hannah still loved him. A little unsatisfying but realistic nonetheless. I bet if you go back and read some of the first person narrative by each of them, you’ll have some pretty solid answers when viewing in retrospect. I don’t think I’m up to it though.

  10. I think the ending is clear enough that Matthew was shot but Patch and the detective shot Patch. But is it just me or does Matthew not real seem like a bad person as an adult. He actually seems genuinely sorry and even says he’ll stay away from people but Patch and Hannah come to him? I understand he bought the house Hannah lives in and it seems sinister but he actually had a pretty good excuse in Peter and it being the best house in the area. I just don’t think it warranted kidnapping him and killing him for shooting someone’s eye out. Weird ending.

  11. I am very upset and disturbed by the ending. I was hoping for a happy ending that all three of them (Matthew, Patrick and Hannah) can reconcile and reach an understanding.

I feel bad for Matthew. And I hate Hannah.

Maybe I missed something. Why did Hannah ask Matthew to invite Patrick along with their outing? Patrick didn’t have a crush on Hannah when he was a kid. He didn’t know that Hannah likes Matthew, right?

Anyway, I would have liked the book more if it was a happy ending (all three of them get on to live their happy lives).
